#RTB on the Radio

The #RTB groundswell continues…

…and rather than repeat the backstory about “RTB” (Raise the Bar), please review my prior posts (“When Swanepoel Talks,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “The People Have Spoken“).

This past Monday, January 18, 2010, the dialog continued in a new venue: on a blog talk radio show hosted by Maya Paveza (@MayaREGuru), Diane Guercio (@HeyAmaretto) and Lesley Lambert (@LesleyLambert).

I was invited onto that show as a “co-featured” guest along with Stefan Swanepoel (@Swanepoel) and Bill Lublin (@BillLublin) specifically to talk about #RTB: the issue of professionalism in real estate.

You can listen to the portion of the show that dealt with the #RTB issue here. In response to this interesting experience, I’d like to say the following:

  • First and f

oremost, thank you to Maya, Diane and Lesley for inviting me onto the show. And thanks to Stefan, Bill and the callers into the show who – along with our gracious hostesses – made the show interesting and dynamic.
  • Second, I was encouraged by the level of passion and energy inherent in the conversation. The prevailing theme that I took away from the experience was “for the most part, we agree that the bar DOES need to be raised in real estate…but how, by what means, and by whom?”
  • Finally, we at Professional One have decided to continue the conversation in this format and have created “Raise the Bar” radio, which you can find at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/raisethebar. We plan to kick the show off with our inaugural broadcast in early February (details to follow on Twitter), and the following guests have already graciously agreed to appear on the show:

We invited 24 people to participate, and 23 accepted…most of them almost immediately. We think this response speaks VOLUMES as to the importance, significance and timeliness of this issue.

I suppose we’ll learn more as time passes and we hear the thoughts and perspectives of these individuals, but we firmly believe that the time has come for REAL professionalism in real estate.

We look forward to continuing the conversation throughout 2010 and beyond, and we hope that you’ll stop by from time to time to listen in and participate in the debate.

And if you have an interest in appearing on the show – or if you know of someone who you think has something meaningful to contribute to the #RTB conversation – please email us at MMcClure@ProfessionalOne.com.

Thanks in advance for helping to increase awareness about #RTB, and, ultimately, to raising the bar on professionalism in real estate!

  • Thanks for pushing this out there. Concerted, consistent effort will, I hope, lead to positive, definable change.

  • Thanks for getting the conversation going. Wouldn’t it be nice if it led to really Raising The Bar (#rtb). It might start an actual movement.

If we don’t speak for what to expect from a professional Realtor who will? If we don’t set the standard for entry and continuing in the professional, no one will. We have people out there with licenses using them only to register FSBOs in the MLS. Is that our total worth? NO. We do so much more but if we don’t hold the profession to a standard how can we express our value proposition.
I don’t know how a part-time agent can truly serve their clients. It is hard to get up with all the changes on a full time basis. I think clients get limited help and the agent doesn’t even know that’s what they’re offering.
Thanks for keeping the issue going. We tried this in nursing profession with entry into practice and decades later it is still a mess. Have to set the standard, make the change, short term pain–long term gain

    • Elizabeth,

I agree that we have a mess on our hands, and we may very well end up in a position similar to what you described in nursing: decades later, but no real improvement. However, my view is that the time is right to have this conversation – with the industry in “chaos” mode, with many of the big brands in decline and with agents as receptive as they are likely EVER going to be – and see what can be done. And thank YOU for taking the time to weigh on on this important issue. I greatly appreciate your contribution to this entire #RTB conversation. And I look forward to more dialogue with you on this point in the future.

      Best,
      Michael

  • Thanks for the invite Michael. Look forward to our RTB chat next week.
