The (New) O.C.

No, this post is not about Ryan. Or Seth. Or any of the other larger-than-life characters that used to inhabit that once-massively-popular TV series known as “The O.C.”

The NEW O.C.: The ever-increasing Obsolescence Cycle.

If you go back to the Baby Boomer era, you will see brands that were successful in large part BECAUSE OF their longevity.

Think Sears & Roebuck.

Or Lehman Brothers.

Or General Motors.

These brands were built over decades, and in some cases, MANY decades. Centuries, even.

And for the longest time – and, again, I am talking DECADES – people thought all these brands were invinceable.

Do you remember this expression? “What’s good for GM is good for America?”

All three of these brands are nowhere near what they once were. *cough*

Few would argue with this observation, right? GM is now owned by the US Government.

Time changes everything, doesn’t it?

Now, let’s look at today.

If I were to ask you to give me a list of the biggest brand names right now, that list might include Facebook…and Twitter…and certainly Google.

These three brands are ENORMOUS right now. And they have one thing in common: none of the three had a major presence 10 years ago.

And your response to that was probably, “Yeah, so….?”

  • Is this blog post an “exaggeration and distortion” of reality? I think not. It’s more like an ILLUMINATION of the NEW reality!

One small problem, no one remembers the OC, you should have went with One Tree Hill. The problem is: you don’t live with a teenager.

Want to borrow one of mine sometime? You know, you pay for college and you can make them your own lab rats and collect all kinds of useful data.
