Corcoran Group’s 10 Social Media Tips
Earlier this year, I had the distinct pleasure of presenting on a Social Media panel at Inman News’ (@inmannews) “Real Estate Connect New York” with Matthew Shadbolt (@Corcoran_Group) of The Corcoran Group, a monster New York City boutique brokerage (that’s him in the photo below). Matthew is London-born and Netherlands-educated and has a Masters Degree. He is smart and interesting.
On our panel, Matthew and I disagreed on a few things, but we developed an instant mutual respect which I think we both recognized in the moment. Inman even wrote a little article about our panel, which you can read here.
Since then, we’ve become fast friends. We had Matthew on our #RTB Radio show, and we were so impressed (listen to archived show here) that we’ve invited him back for a second visit sometime in the next month or so.
In any event, I am speaking at RETechSouth on March 31 on a topic similar to the one Matthew and I discussed at Real Estate Connect New York, and I asked him if he’d review the foundational blog post I wrote on that topic and provide comment.
Not only did he provide comment, he gave me what became this blog post. I am presenting this without any modification or editing whatsoever (except for the adding of bolding to emphasize key takeaways).
Matthew’s Thoughts on Social Media
Matthews’ 10 Social Media Tips:
1. Focus on making everything you post of the highest quality you possibly can. Remove as much as you can before you publish. Post less in favor of better.
2. Be helpful, provide insight, and share things that are completely unique and provide a local perspective that only you know.
3. Have a point of view. Just because it’s called ‘social’ media doesn’t mean that you can’t disagree with other people. That’s OK.
4. Plan ahead. Social platforms are in their infancy, and as such change all the time. Be prepared to change with them and adjust your approach in as nimble a way as possible.
5. Have fun. People need to understand there’s a human being with a life behind the content.
6. Cross promote your social media initiatives across everything else you do
7. Look beyond real estate for your inspiration
8. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or admit that you don’t know something. Be curious.
9. Understand who the people are that are sucking the life out of your feed (and your day) by posting irrelevant and unhelpful content. Unfollow those people immediately.
10. Take everything offline as fast as possible. Use social media to make a difference in the real world.
Thanks, Matthew!
I think Matthew makes many great points, and I hope you learned as much from this as I did.
And thank YOU, Matthew, for sharing of your knowledge and wisdom so selflessly…

Learning how to disagree without offending in social-media is a skill I haven’t mastered so I tend to play safe..but I continue to study other influencers to get pointers from them.
Sometimes I tend to hold back on certain opinions because I feel some people will disagree and don’t want to get confrontational but these types of conversations are usually the most useful and talked about.
